Traumatic asphyxia

Traumatic asphyxia, also known as Perte's syndrome, is a medical emergency resulting from intense compression of the thoracic cavity. This condition causes venous back-flow from the right side of the heart into the veins of the neck and brain, leading to characteristic signs such as cyanosis in the upper body and petechiae in the conjunctiva.

Traumatic asphyxia occurs when a powerful compressive force is applied to the thoracic cavity, most often seen in motor vehicle accidents as well as industrial and farming accidents. The sudden impact increases intrathoracic pressure, and for the condition to develop, a Valsalva maneuver is required at the time of the traumatic force. Exhalation against a closed glottis traps air in the thoracic cavity, which then increases venous back-pressure that is transferred through the right atrium to the superior vena cava and into the head and neck veins and capillaries.
