The institute's origins trace to the late 1960s, when planning and construction began for what was intended to be a hospital. However, the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 interrupted the project. After independence, the Government of Bangladesh completed the facility and opened it in 1972 as the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital. In October 2002, the name was changed to the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), reflecting its specialized focus on trauma and orthopedics.
